Lesson 2 

Colors (Los Colores)


Description of lesson: This cross-curricular (Spanish, science, and art) lesson teaches 

students the names of colors and how to create secondary colors from primary colors.


Goal: To teach students the names of colors and introduce them to primary and secondary 

colors



Objective: Students will be able to: 1) identify primary colors: red, blue, yellow; and secondary 
colors: green, orange, purple; 2) create secondary colors from primary colors



Materials: Balloon image (provided) [Note: Balloon images will need to be copied or traced 

on to a transparency. Three additional balloon images will need to be copied onto paper and 

colored red, blue, and yellow.]; transparencies; red, blue, and yellow markers (vis-à-vis or 
permanent)



Vocabulary: Primary colors (colores primarios), secondary colors (colores secundarios), red 

(rojo), blue (azul), yellow (amarillo), green (verde), purple (morado), orange (anaranjado), .
brown (café, alternative: marrón), white (blanco), black (negro), pink (rosado), gray (gris)d

Focus and Review: Explain that Fritzi the Mouse is having a birthday party with balloons. zLLC.istlefrit

“Look at all the balloons. What colors do we see?” (Miren todos los globos. ¿Qué colores 

vemos?) Show students the three red, blue, and yellow balloons. Have students identify the 
red, blue, and yellow balloons by asking them to name the colors of the balloons. Let them 

know that these colors are called primary colors (colores primarios).



Teacher Input: “Today we are going to make different colored balloons using our primary 
colors.” (Hoy vamos a hacer globos de diferentes colores usando nuestros colores primarios.) 

Provide each student with a non-colored balloon on a transparency. Have students identify the 

colors of the markers. Have each student color a balloon using one of the three primary colors. 

[Note: For very young children, use pre-colored balloons.]


Guided Practice:

• Once balloons are colored, say: “Let’s take the blue balloon and the yellow balloon. What d.
