Lesson 6
Shape Collage (Collage de Figuras)
Description of lesson: This lesson teaches students vocabulary for shapes.
Goal: To teach students shapes and the names of shapes
Objective: Students will be able to: 1) identify shapes and their names; 2) use ine motor skills
Vocabulary: Circle (el círculo), square (el cuadrado), rectangle (el rectángulo), triangle (el
triángulo), oval (el óvalo), parallelogram (el paralelogramo), octagon (el octágono), rhombus/
diamond (el rombo/el diamante)
Materials: Shape Flashcards (provided); Shape Templates (provided)[Note: Prior to the
lesson, teacher should print the Shape Templates onto cardstock, then use the Shape
Templates to trace shapes onto different colored construction paper. Trace and cut 20-30
shapes per student.]; cardstock; various colored construction paper; white paper; tape or glue. d.

Focus and Review: “I have some cards with pictures on them. Let’s look.” (Yo tengo algunas
tarjetas con dibujos. Vamos a verlas.) Take out Shape Flashcards and hold one up. Ask
students to identify the color. Lay the card on a table and continue until all cards have been
shown. “The cards have different colors on them. They also have different shapes. Today we
are going to talk about shapes.” (Las tarjetas tienen diferentes colores. Éstas también tienen
diferentes formas. Hoy vamos a hablar de las formas.)
Teacher Input:
• Hold up the red lashcard and ask students, “What color is this?” Red. (¿Qué color es
éste? Rojo.)
• Once the red card has been identiied, hold it up and say, “Yes, this is the red card. And, it
is a square.” (Sí, ésta es la tarjeta roja. Además, también es un cuadrado.) Have students
repeat square (cuadrado).
• Say, “This is a red square.” (Éste es un cuadrado rojo.) Have students repeat.
• Continue until all shapes have been introduced.d.
• Hold up a card and ask students questions such as “Is this a square or a circle? Is this ae

Guided Practice: Lay out pre-cut colored shapes made using the Shape Templates. Takeig1

a blank piece of white paper and ask students to choose a shape for a model collage. Have Ahi

students provide the name of the shape as they select it. Tape or glue the shape onto the white
paper and continue the process until a collage is complete.
